Winter 2009
|
Instructor:
Lynne Talley, (email: ltalley@ucsd.edu) Time: Friday 12-12:50 Location: OAR conference room Seminar URL: http://www-pord.ucsd.edu/~ltalley/sio219 |
The observational seminar meets during
the academic quarters and is open to all (students, postdocs,
researchers, etc). It is a forum for informal discussion of current literature
on observational aspects of physical oceanography and for presentation of
individual's work in progress. The subject matter for each quarter is
determined by the participants, weighted towards the preferences of the
enrolled students.
New
technology
The spring 2008 quarter is devoted to new
technology for physical oceanography.
The format begins with a 30 minute presentation. During discussion we will break into
3-4 smaller groups with each tasked to address specific topics. At the end of
class we will meet again as a large group for a general discussion. Enrolled
students present the summary, work with the instructor to formulate the
questions for discussion, and lead the discussion.
Topics that were suggested at the
organizational meeting include:
acoustical instruments, optical instruments and methods, ADCP on surface
drifters, gliders, Jaffe optics lab tour, satellite salinity, Ocean Sites
moorings, research fleet developments, fiber optics as sensors, sensors for
chemical measurements, Sontek lab tour, JPL Open
House field trip (May 2-3, during spring quarter).
