Internship Opportunities (2009):

This is a summary of all undergraduate internship and research programs that come to our attention. It is by no means a complete list, and in some cases we may know little about the programs.

Environmental Internship at OurEarth.org

Are you looking for an environmental internship or are you interested in volunteering with an environmental organization this summer? If so, then consider joining the OurEarth.org community. OurEarth.org is a grassroots initiative that intends to completely transform the way environmental programs, activities, and information is found on the internet so that the public can become more proactive in protecting the environment.

OurEarth.org is a national 501(c)3 non-profit organization and it still has internships available for the summer. Internships are unpaid but students can receive course credit if they have their own faculty advisor. Students that do not have enough time to commit to an internship but would still like to be involved with our efforts are welcome to volunteer. For added flexibility, all work is done remotely-so you can work from your home, campus, or anywhere else-yet you will still have very frequent contact with the OurEarth.org leadership via conference calls and email.

What makes OurEarth.org unique and what are the advantages of getting involved? OurEarth.org is still a young organization so this is an opportunity to join on the ground floor of an up-and-coming organization. This means that you can take on leadership roles and, if you choose, have responsibilities that almost no other internships/volunteer activities can offer which can certainly be useful on a resume. Additionally, OurEarth.org involves over 50 environmental professionals, experts, and undergraduate and graduate students from around the country so this is opportunity to begin networking for a future environmental career.

Summer Student Employment Program with the U.S. EPA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Research and Development, National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) is looking for energetic and highly motivated summer interns. Internships will be available for Biologists, Environmental Health Scientists, Chemists, Physical Scientists, Biological Science Laboratory Technicians, Physical Science Laboratory Technicians, Engineering Technicians, Office Automation Clerks, and Laborers. There will be 39 available positions. Interns will work directly with professionals and gain valuable "real-world" experience.

The deadline to submit a resume is April 24, 2009.

Positions may be located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Narragansett, Rhode Island; Gulf Breeze, Florida; Corvallis, Oregon; and Duluth, Minnesota. Internships will tentatively begin on May 10, 2009 and run no later than September 30, 2009. All positions are full-time and will work 40 hours per week.

You must be a student to apply for the position - an individual who is enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree seeking student and is taking at least a half-time academic course load in an accredited high school, college, university, vocational or technical school. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

California State Parks, Department of Parks and Recreation

Opportunity for any student who is serious in pursuing a career in Recreation, Education, or any Earth Science pursuit. This assistant position has never existed before. It would mean making contacts with dozens of environmental agencies as part of the daily job, leading and assisting with training of high school youth interns, helping to organize and create a newly grant funded program, and it has amazing potential for advancement within the State Government or partnering government agencies. Elementary Institute of Science (EIS)

Seeks interns to serve as mentors to participants in the "Commission on Science That Matters". The commission is a science program for dedicated local high school students who take on specific topics of greater concern. This year, the participants will investigate the issue of water in San Diego.
