DIMES is a US/UK field program aimed at measuring diapycnal and isopycnal mixing in the Southern Ocean. The main goal of DIMES US1 cruise was to inject a specifically design tracer, 76 kg of trifluoromethyl sulphur pentafluoride (CF3SF5), on a density surface near 1500m depth west of Drake Passage. More details can be found in this paper. A nice article about DIMES written by Natalie Wolchover can be found here. These are some photos taken aboard the R/V Roger Revelle during January 2009.
